Employment Opportunities

International Students can apply to work part time while studying in Australia.
To apply for a work permit you will need to obtain your student visa and arrive in Adelaide to study.

Once you have arrived, you can take your passport to the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs, and pay AUD$50,00 to apply for a work permit. International students can work up to 20 hours per week. During holidays, no restrictions to working hours apply.

 

Permanent Residency

If you complete an award course such as a Diploma, Degree or post graduate studies, you can apply for permanent residency in Australia.

 

Work Rights for international Students

As an international student, you are also able to work while studying in Australia, providing you have the right work visa. It is understood that more than 30% of international students work in employment while studying at the same time.
There are many things to consider when thinking of working while studying abroad. First of all, you should think about how much time you need to devote to study, and how much time you will have free to work. You do need to do well in your studies too!

It is also advisable to try to work somewhere that is related to your future career choice – internships and volunteer programs are a good way to go if you want experience and advancement into your dream career. There are many benefits of working in Australia, just one of which is gaining great work experience at an international firm.

There is another option which many international students take, being the ‘easy’ job which allows you to focus more fully on study whilst also earning. Jobs such as waitressing, retail, bartending and so forth can allow you to remain more focused on study whilst also enhancing workplace experience.

Most university campuses and educational providers in Australia have Career Development Offices or something similar which will help you with support and assistance in applying for jobs in Australia.

There really is no limit to where you choose to work – international students can find work in an area and field of their choice. Popular jobs for international students include restaurants, retail, office work, nannying and tutoring. You can expect to earn around A$6-15 per hour, depending on the type of work and your age. Not only this, but pay rates go up during weekends and public holidays too.
So your opportunities are endless! You just need to go out there and find them.
